The CanCan group - about us and how we got started
We are the "CanCan" Transition Together Group (Yes We Can, Can Do, Can Can etc.), who began meeting in April 2009. Eight of the eleven members had previously been in a Transition Town 'Home Group', which was formed to explore issues around transition - both practical and emotional.
As a home group, even though we selected topics for each monthly meeting, we found ourselves chatting about a wide range of topics whereas the Transition Together programme has been wonderful in helping us re-gain our focus and really work together on practical issues.
Our group has been keeping a flipchart of our progress (not at all, a bit, fully done etc..) and this helps keep it very clear. The programme could be extended well beyond the 7 weeks to revisit each of the themes to really check our progress.
Even though some of the ideas are not new or difficult to all of us, none of can say that we have made all the changes identified , and the resources provided and discussions have proved a real impetus for action. Now, after only three sessions together, it feels as though real progress is being made. The resource material provided also frames each theme within a 'bigger picture' - this has led to spirited discussions!
Our group is made up of diverse individuals, with French, Australian, Brazilian and Dutch nationals as well as some British! We range from our 30s to our 60s, and when we're not in our TT group, are engaged in housing, the arts, student life, parenting, work in journalism, environmental consulting, active re-skilling after translating work, gardeners, in high street shops and more...
